This is one of a series of historical geocoins issued in Germany. While a number of Dutch leaders have been called Willem van Oranje (William of Orange, in English), including William III, King of England, this geocoin honors the man who led the Dutch revolt against the Spanish Habsburg's rule over the area now comprising the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg. The Eighty-Years' War, in which Willem took an active part, ultimately resulted in Spain losing control of the Low Countries. He was murdered three years after Philip II of Spain declared him an outlaw, and put a price on his head. We bought a couple of these mainly because we liked the design, not because of any familial ties to either William or any of the other characters in that part of history.
BTW: we usually keep the copper finish of any geocoins we buy that are available in copper, but the two-tone came out a lot nicer than we expected, so we (reluctantly) are sending out the copper. Sure hope it gets to travel a lot!
