Current Goal

My mission is to travel to any geocache in the world with a military/service theme, or to visit those located in communities named after military heroes.

About This Item

Gen. Henry Ware Lawton

Henry Ware Lawton was a highly respected U.S. Army officer who served with distinction in the Civil War, the Apache Wars, the Spanish-American War, and was the only U.S. general officer to be killed during the Philippine-American War.  The city of Lawton, Oklahoma – where this bug started its travels – takes its name from the Medal of Honor recipient.

Lawton (the town in Oklahoma, that is) is the seat of Comanche County.  Located in Southwest Oklahoma, approximately 80 miles southwest of Oklahoma City, it is the fifth largest city in the state.  It is also the home of Fort Sill, a U.S. Army installation that was founded as a cavalry outpost in 1869.  Fort Sill remains the only active installation of all the posts on the South Plains built during the Indian Wars.

Fort Sill is the home of the U.S. Army Field Artillery School, as well as the Marine Corps’ site for Field Artillery MOS School, the U.S. Army Air Defense Artillery School, the 31st Air Defense Artillery Brigade, the 75th FIRES Brigade, and the 214th FIRES Brigade.  Fort Sill is also one of four locations for U.S. Army basic combat training.

I was raised less than an hour from Lawton and have spent nearly two decades working in the community, so … YES, I have been to Lawton.

(NOTE: This is the second in my series of travel bugs commemorating Oklahoma towns named after notable individuals.  "I've Been to Gotebo" is the first in the series.)
