The Book of Kells - Irelands's greatest treasure and one of the masterworks of western art.  The Book of Kells is an illustrated manuscript of the four gospels of the New Testament of the Bible.  

The most interesting fact about the monastic culture that produced this book was also isolated from the chaos of the fall of the Roman Empire, and some believe that western civilization was saved in these tiny monastic outposts until the rest of Europe was ready to receive it once again.
