To visit the Dry Tortugas National Park, located on the western edge of the Florida Keys.
I first learned about the Dry Tortugas National Park when I saw a movie entitled The Ordeal of Dr. Mudd, which chronicles Dr. Samuel Mudd's ordeal following the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. Dr. Mudd was accused of being a co-conspirator with John Wilkes Booth. He avoided being hanged like four other co-conspirators, but was sentenced to life at Ft. Jefferson, America's Devil's Island, which is located in the Gulf of Mexico at what is now Dry Tortugas National Park. He was later pardoned by President Andrew Johnson for his role in stopping an epidemic of Yellow Fever that was ravaging the prison.
Unfortunately, the recent oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico could adversely affect the ecosystem surrounding Dry Tortugas, including vital nesting grounds for various sea turtles. This travel bug would like to visit beaches and eventually get to Dry Tortugas. Pictures taken along the way would be greatly appreciated.
