The Field Ration Eating Device (commonly abbreviated to "FRED") is a small device which is a combination of a can opener, a bottle opener and a spoon. In 2005 it was deemed redundant, and was withdrawn from issue to the Australian Defence Force in its Combat Ration - One Man (CR1M) ration packs. Fortunately common sense prevailed when it was realised that the ration packs still contained cans and a can opener was still required! FRED remains in service It is also known colloquially as, the "F*****g Ridiculous Eating Device".
