Current Goal

Travel on geocaching trips in order to allow the person who gave the Staff Stick to its current owner to do some vicarious geocaching from her location in southern Arizona.

About This Item

The Joker pin is almost 25 years old!

Although it is both a stick AND a staff, the name is not redundant. While stationed at Fort Huachuca awaiting the start of my career course, I served as the personnel officer on the battalion commander's staff. During that time I was honored to work with several outstanding Soldiers, as well as a couple of great civilian contractors and government employees. One of these contractors was the (reluctant) leader of the office. She worked several levels above her paygrade and always chased down answers and solutions to problems. She definitely went way beyond the call of duty in keeping the office running.

In spite of the fact that I mostly just signed paperwork and went to meetings (I'm an officer - what do you expect?), she gave me this hiking stick as a going-away present when my course started. Her brother hand made it, to include the leather grip and adding the army boot and sock at the bottom. She has had the Joker pin since the mid-80s. VERY cool.

Now that I'm on my way to other duty stations, I'm making the stick trackable so she can follow along. Thanks, Ms G. I hope you get some enjoyment out of these posts.

Almost four years to the day from the time when I was presented the "staff stick," I am back in the desert southwest and got to meet Ms G again, as she was hiking in the Bataan Memorial Death March where I had brought my cadets. We only got a second to shake hands as she was finishing the march, it was awesome to see her again. Just wish she could have seen that I still take the staff stick on some of my cooler trips.
