This coin is one of a series of five sibling coins. Each is characterized by a different name of a European City. The five coins are in competition to travel the longest distance. Hopefully some of them will travel back to Europe.
The owner was born in Brussels, seat of the Commission of the European Union, just one block from the Grand Place - the Market Place at the center of the city. His nickname "kiekefretter" has been given to the inhabitants of Brussels since the 14th century. It means "chicken eater". In the 14th century the merchants of the duchy of Brabant travelling in the region of the Rhine River were regularly attacked by brigands with the blessing of the duke of Julich. Wenceslas de Luxembourg, duke of Brabant, organized a punitive expedition with 8,000 knights from Brussels loaded with food and hundreds of chichens. During the battle, burdened with all that food, the knights were not able to properly maneuver their horses and were defeated. Since that time the inhabitants of Brussels have been called "chicken eater" or kiekefretters.
