Current Goal

This geocoin represents a very respectful attempt to remember the lives and families of every freshwater mariner who challenged the untamed natural forces of the Great Lakes and lost everything.  Its mission is to visit a large number of shoreline caches in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York and be photographed on/with/against Great Lakes vessels of every type and function. The biggest challenge is to photograph the coin with/against any variation of a Great Lakes untamed natural force.

About This Item

Davy Jones's Locker is an idiom for the bottom of the sea: the resting place of drowned sailors. It is used as a euphemism for death at sea (to be sent to Davy Jones's Locker), whereas the name Davy Jones is a nickname for what would be the devil, saint, or god of the seas. The origins of the name are unclear and many theories have been put forth, including incompetent sailors, a pub owner who kidnapped sailors, or that Davy Jones is another name for the devil—as in "Devil Jonah." This nautical superstition was popularized in the 1800s.

Beautiful coin. Will see what we can do about getting this closer to a different Great Lake soon.

Finally! We apologize for holding on to this beautiful coin for as long as we have, but our intention has always been to bring it to Duluth. We just thought it would be sooner than this. We dropped this coin off in a really cool spot overlooking Duluth harbor and wished it good luck on its journey from here. Travel long and far!

We've had this one for way too long but we haven't found a suitable port-side cache to leave it in yet. Since we were traveling (albeit in the wrong direction) though we thought we could at least give it some miles. We will find a good, appropriate place to drop it soon.

What an intriguingly beautful coin! We'll try to move it more northernly towards the Lakes. Thanks for sharing.
