Calypso went cruisin' up to Pearblossom this weekend for the powwow, and here's some picks. The crab got to enjoy both northern and southern plains traditional music.

  • The Crab sits on a hay bale and watches the dances
  • The lead singer on the northern drum gets ready... This drum is one of the few 'kids' drums in Southern California -- most of the singers are under 15 and are learning the songs and the ways of the powwow. Graduates of this drum have won many awards for their singing abilities.
  • The Southern Drum... The southern drum occupies a place of honor in the center of the arena, a tradition that is not always observed at modern powwows today. This one is Hale & Co.

Calypso Crab is going to go enjoy the music of the Native American Indian this weekend in Pearblossom at the powwow at The Outpost. We'll see if he's drawn towards the desert or not; he might just hang out with the drums for a while and keep with us on our journey to the Chumash Interpretive Center, Bakersfield powwow and then finally, down to San Luis Rey Mission for a powwow there as well. A lot of music from a lot of nations - hope he's ready for it!
