This trackable has reached its original goal to travelTo travel to the birthplace of artist Thomas Gainsborough – Sudbury, Suffolk in England or to travel that distance 3574 miles / 5752 km!
Its NEW mission is to make its way back home to the McMaster Museum of Art in Hamilton, Ontario Canada.
Thomas Gainsborough (1727 – 1788) was an English portrait and landscape painter. While residing in Bath, Gainsborough quickly established himself as the most sought after portraitist. Most of his work was created from observations of nature and human nature. Although Gainsborough was well known for the speed with which he applied paint, he was often overdue with his commissions, noting that “painting and punctuality mix like oil and vinegar.” His greatest passion – outside painting – was music.
Portraiture was his profession, but landscape painting was his pleasure. In 1774 Gainsborough was removed to London which prevented him from painting the countryside. He began drawing imaginary landscapes by arranging stones, twigs and broccoli “trees.” He produced many landscape drawings, some in pencil, charcoal and chalk, while occasionally he made drawings which he later varnished.
The McMaster Museum of Art in Hamilton, Ontario has one watercolour and black chalk drawing by Thomas Gainsborough called Shepherds and Sheep in a Wooded Landscape.
