About This Item

Edgar Degas (1834-1917) born Hilaire-Germain-Edgar De Gas, was a French artist famous for his work in painting, sculpture, printmaking, and drawing. Degas is regarded as one of the founders of Impressionism ­– although rejecting the term and deeming himself as a “realist.” His mastery of depicting movement is shown through the many masterpieces of female nudes and dancers. His portraits are noted for his depiction of human isolation and complexity.
 
Degas began an art collection which included work by contemporaries such as: Pissarro, Manet, Cezanne, Gauguin and Van Gogh. In the late 1880s, Degas developed a passion for photography. Photographs were often taken by lamplight and included a few photo portraits of friends such as the double portrait of Renoir and Mallarme, as well as, photographs of dancers and nudes used as references in Degas’ paintings. The depiction of Parisian life, off-centre compositions and experimentation with colour and form, reflected both Degas and the Impressionist movement.
 
The McMaster Museum of Art in Hamilton, Ontario is proud to own two drawings by Degas.  One is a copy of the "Self Portrait" by Filippino Lippi, which is in the Uffizi Galleria in Florence, and the other is a portrait of the artist’s father.
