About This Item

Vasily Kandinsky (1866-1944), born Wassily Wassilyevich Kandinsky, was a Russian painter and art theorist. He related the act of painting to creating music, as music had always been the main inspiration behind his work. As one of the founders of abstract art, he devoted himself to painting. In 1922 he joined the Bauhaus Group at Weimar where he developed his distinct style. In 1933 Hitler closed down the Bauhaus and Kandinsky was forced to flee Germany.
 
Kandinsky was a ‘synaesthete’ meaning that he saw sound as colour and colour as sound. His writings on colour theory are known to be abstract and have been described as paranormal.
 
There are six works on paper by Kandinksy in the McMaster Museum of Art collection.
