About This Item

Scott's Namesake

This Travel Bug is placed in memory of Scott Powell.  Scott was involved with scouts from the time he was old enough to join.  He led troops everywhere he went, even when he was enlisted in the Army in Germany.  Scott was the Camp Ranger at Camp Gorsuch, Chugiak, Alaska for over 20 years.  In that time, he touched countless lives.  He retired to our family cottage on Pleasant Hill Lake in Perrysville, Ohio.  This bug was started at "Mt. Jeez Overlook" that looks down on Malabar Farm and Pleasant Hill Lake.
Tragically, Scott and 4 other leaders from Alaska were killed in an accident at the National Boy Scout Jambouree in 2006.  Although his death made worldwide headlines, his life is what has made him immortal.  He died helping others, and doing what he loved.  When asked if he could help out, his trademark line was always, "You bet!"
It wasn't until news of his death rolled out, that we started to really grasp how MANY lives he touched.  He even has a mountain in Asia named for him by the Yale climbing team.
We hope that this tag finds scouts, both  boys and girls around the world and the pray that scouting continues to be that anchor that so many youth need.

He would have LOVED GEOCACHING, and even more, taking his neice and nephews, the TxJeepKidz on this great adventure.

Figured I held on to this longer than I should have. Needed to get it back in play sooner but just now had the chance. Did have the chance to take to scout meeting and pass it around to the boys. All thought it was very cool to see a tribute like this traveling from cache to cache. Hope it makes it scouts both near and far.

Retrieve It from a Cache 8/6/2011 thepollockboys retrieved it from Mt. Jeez Overlook Ohio   Visit Log

We were visiting today from Indy, in town for the IndyCar race at MidOhio. Found this and as scouters ourselves just had to grab it and move it along. Once we read the discription and learded of Scott's story we feel it's an honor to be the first to grab this and move on. We'll meet with our troop back in Indy next week, take a few pics and get this one moving again. Keep on scouting!
