large coin with heft. 1.75 inches by 1.6 inches 2 inches corner to corner 3.5 mm thick 46 grams antique gold. Unusual shape. The coin has claer eposy to make it shine. The front is in the shape of a NA traditional totem. The enamel is matte and the 3-D is bold The enamel is gold, red, black and brown. The reverse is delicate 3-D metal work. The raised design has script that reads "Black Canyon Beach Luau", "August 14, 2010", " GC2BRE9". There is artwork showing a pinapple, filip flops, flowers and leaves. These are all done in raised line work. A very nice event coin.
Info on the coin: A luau is a Hawaiian feast or party. It features traditional Hawaiian food, drink and music (no matter where in the world it is actually held). Traditionally it features foods, such as poi, kalua pig, poke, lomi salmon, opihi, haupia and beer and entertainment, such as Hawaiian music and hula. Among people from Hawaii, the concepts of "luau" and "party" are often blended, resulting in graduation luaus, wedding luaus, and birthday luaus.
Don the Beachcomber (who invented the tiki bar in 1933) is probably the first person to stage a traditional luau outside of the Hawaiian Islands. He would have Hawaiian luaus at his ranch in Encino California which he dubbed "the Polynesian village". Luaus and tiki themed parties lost much of their popularity in the 1960s and 1970s.
This geocoin was designed by the late Mike Davis aka River Cacher. I never met him in person or attended one of his events, but he liked tiki, luaus, geocaching and geocoins, so I am sure I would have liked him and all the wonderful parties and events he was constantly planning for the geocaching community. He will be missed.
So many of my trackable have been muggled that I do not release new GCs except as virtuals. If you do not approve, please leave it in the cache for a cacher who understands. Thanks. LR
