Piet Heyn Geocoin

The Eighty Years’ War, or Dutch War of independence, (1568–1648) began as a revolt of the Seventeen Provinces against Philip II of Spain, the sovereign of the Habsburg Netherlands.

After the initial stages Philip II deployed his armies and regained control over most of the rebelling provinces. However, under the leadership of the exiled William of Orange the northern provinces continued their resistance and managed to oust the Spanish armies, and established the republic of the Seven United Netherlands.

The subsequent war between the Spanish empire and the Republic continued, although the heartland of the Republic was no longer threatened. The war ended in 1648 with the Peace of Munster when the Dutch Republic was recognised as an independent country.

Design

The geocoin is round shaped and has a size of 1.75″ (approx. 44 mm). The coin is made after a medal commemorating of Admiral Piet Heyn (1578-1629) and his historical capture of the Spanish silver fleet in 1628 near Matanzas, Cuba. The front of the coins shows the bust of Admiral Piet Heyn in armour, lace ruff and chain. The text ‘PET:PETRI.HEINIVS.FOED:BELG:ORD:ARCHITHALASS’ means: Piet Pieterson Heyn, Admiral of the United Provinces. On the back side of the geocoin a 3D view of the naval action is shown. The text ‘HEINIAD NVP SENSIT SPOLIATA MATANCA’ means literally: Matanzas, plundered lately, felt the might of the race of Heyn. The 3D view is surrounded by the words ‘Piet Pieterszoon Heyn - Dutch Admiral who found his cache in 1628 in the bay of Matanzas’

Het is alweer een poosje geleden dat we met z’n drieën naar een event zijn geweest. Maar vandaag ga ik weer samen met VanDieren en Jinx-It op pad voor onze eerste, en helaas ook laatste, SAKE event. Wij hadden deze in de agenda gezet, omdat we nog nooit in deze regio hebben gecached.

Goed voor elkaar dit Event. Mooie stands. Het loggen ging moeizaam want de PC crashte. Het mooie weer helpt enorm. Binnen vinden we een enorme collectie van mooie coins. Ik heb er verlekkerd naar staan te kijken en te bedenken wat voor mooie avonturen je zal hebben beleefd om deze te behalen.

Zelf heb ik ook een paar van die bijzondere herinneringen. Mijn meest bijzondere is toch wel een wandeling een berg op in Kroatië aan het begin van de avond om een FTF te halen. Dit duurde echter veel langer dan gepland waardoor ik in het donker (met zaklamp) terug moest lopen. Wees gerust, ik had allerlei spullen bij me, en de zaklamp was het meest belangrijk. Ik zou dit nooit weer doen, maar door rustig te blijven en de tijd te nemen ben ik veilig beneden beland. Ook een aantal nachtcaches (de tijd is weer aangebroken) zijn bijzonder geweest.

Deze collectie is echt geweldig mooi. Ik ben eens iemand in Engeland tegengekomen op een event die ook boeken vol had met aandenkens. Wauw. Bedankt dat ik deze mooie collectie mag ontdekken. Er zijn nog een paar extra coins toegevoegd van vrienden van Geo-Dragonchild. Hartelijk dank!

Geo-Dragonchild stelde zijn geocoin verzameling ten toon tijdens het SAKE2016 event. We hebben genoten van de prachtige uitstalling en waren onder de indruk van de omvang van de verzameling.

Am 08.10 waren wir DVERK's und unser Sohn Liam (LErdO) zu Gast in Holland auf dem Event Saens Kessers Evenement [SAKE2016] - GC64Z75-. Wir hatten die weite Anreise auf uns genommen und haben nicht nur viele nette Menschen getroffen, sondern auch bekannte Gesichter gesehen. Es hat uns sehr gefreut dich mal wieder zu sehen und mit dir ein paar Worte wechseln aber natürlich und insbesondere deine fantastische Sammlung begutachtet. Daher bedanke ich mich dafür, deine besondere Sammlung (und deiner Freunde) discovern zu dürfen, es ist mir eine Ehre! Deze verzameling gezien tijdens de SAKE2016. Prachtig tentoon gesteld in een overzichtelijke vitrine. Grandioos om dit bijeen te zien en de je ziet wat de moeite van de eigenaar en vooral de liefde voor deze leuke hobby. Bedankt.

I have been given this incredibly huge collection of trackables by Geo-Dragonchild. Since that moment I am trying to visit (and admire) individually as many of these trackables as possible - but the collection is so big that I may not be able to visit all of them in details. I met Geo-Dragonchild perhaps several times during various Mega and Giga events in Europe, definitely it was this month at North Wales Mega event on the beautiful Llangollen canal. The Geo-Dragonchild's collection gives really a pleasure to browse through. I congratulate the owner for the given time and investment that this collection represents. Indeed, incredible! Thanks.

This guy introduced me to geocaching a day in October 2011. The days are still counting 😁! Now I was invited for a great evening with chat and "coinfest". I am really proud knowing you and what a great collection. The coins are amazing!
