Die Stadt Wesel ist im deutschsprachigen Raum insbesondere durch die Antwort des Echos auf die Frage nach ihrem Bürgermeister bekannt. Doch hinter der Kreisstadt am Niederrhein verbirgt sich mehr, als nur das berühmte Esel-Echo.
Da die Stadt Wesel in ihrem Wappen drei Wiesel führt, liegt die Vermutung nahe, der Name Wesel leite sich von diesen früher am Niederrhein angeblich zahlreich lebenden Tieren ab. Dies ist jedoch unzutreffend. Das Wiesel im Stadtwappen entspricht vielmehr dem häufigen Brauch, Tierbilder als Schild- oder Wappenzeichen zu benutzen. Vermutlich wählte man dieses Tier als Wappentier, weil der Klang dem des Stadtnamens ähnelt. Die Bezeichnung "Wesel" ist jedoch deutlich älter als das Weseler Stadtwappen.
Die älteste bekannte Namensform der Stadt ist Wisele oder Wesele, in lateinischen Urkunden aus dem 11. und 12. Jahrhunder ist von villa wisele bzw. villa wesele die Rede.
Die erste Silbe des Ortsnamen bedeutet soviel wie Wiese oder Weide.
Die zweite Silbe -sel oder -sal wird mit Wohnsitz oder auch Siedlung übersetzt. Das vorangestellte villa meint ein Landgut oder einen Herrenhof.
Somit ist der Name Wesel mit Herrenhof in der Wiese zu erklären.

The oldest well-known name form of the city is Wisele or Wesele, in latin documents from 11 and 12. Jahrhunder is of mansion wisele and/or mansion the wesele speech. The first syllable place names means as much as meadow or pasture. The second syllable sel or sal is translated with domicile or also settlement.
