On March 27 1900. Gus Gibbons and Frank Lesueur were ambushed while serving on a posse while tracking the Smith Gang north east of St. Johns Az.
In September of 1900, Dick Gibbons (Gus Gibbons uncle) ran for Territorial Legislature, and won office by campaigning on the need to start the Arizona Rangers. In August of 1901 the Arizona Rangers were being formed.
Their first task was to catch the Smith Gang.
The Arizona Rangers were created by the Arizona Territorial Legislature in 1901, disbanded in 1909, and were subsequently reformed in 1957.
