This travel bug has a very specific and ambitious goal – to find the specific village in the Alsace (or maybe somewhere in Germany) where my great-grandfather, Nikolaus Matthias Kuehner, was born – on July 12, 1824. I hope that the TB will travel to the Alsace, which was then and is now a part of France, and visit as many villages as it can. Once it is there, I hope that geocachers will take and post pictures of the churches, cemeteries, and other features of the area, looking for clues to his family. The name may be spelled Kihner, Kuhner, or Kühner. Although Nikolaus emigrated from this area of France, he clearly considered himself German. His tombstone in St. Lucas, Fayette County, Iowa is in German. The village names, in both French and German, can be found at (visit link) .
My wildest hope would be for a fellow genealogist who is also a geocacher to find this bug, know something about the church records there, and find the names of his parents, but I’m happy just to learn more about the general area. People can see my genealogy information at http://kuennenhollerbach.weebly.com and http://ossianfestinastlucasfamilies.weebly.com, and communicate with me directly through the entry form which can be found there, or through www.geocaching.com, user name WafflingLlama.
