This travel bug is in memory of Captain Lawrence Edward Oates (1880-1912).
Its mission is to follow in its namesakes explorer and travel as far south as possible, maybe to the South Pole.
But, unlike the explorer, hopefully return home one day!
Captain Oates the English Antarctic explorer who reached the South Pole with Scott and three others. On the return journey he deliberately left his companions in camp, to go out in a blizzard and meet his death, because his severe frost-bite was holding up the party's progress.
The travel bug is part of a family of explorer travel bugs who are retracing the footsteps of great explorers set on their way by GJJLK.
