Current Goal

To spread some knowledge of "kiwi" (New Zealand)  icons wherever it might wander and hopefully to encourage you to visit our wonderful country.[|)]
Since I acquired this trackable it has travelled with me on most of my caching expeditions, nearly all of which have been on public transport (including planes, buses and trains) and on foot.  I was amazed to find that in just over a year it has travelled over 4000 km which means I have done the same!  But now time to let it loose to wander the whole wide world, wherever it wants to go, spreading the word about some of our unique icons and hoping to get you interested in learning more.

About This Item

This travel bug  is in the shape  of a jandal (or in some countries  known as a "thong") with pictures of a few iconic items associated with New Zealand, known as "Kiwiana."
As well as the jandal itself it contains other iconic items associated with New Zealand:
Kiwi-  our national bird, note that it is NOT a fruit- see next item!
Kiwifruit- known overseas as "kiwi"  but never as that by New Zealanders who always say "kiwifruit" to distinguish it from the bird or from New Zealanders who are also known as "kiwi."
Pohutukawa is known as the New Zealand Christmas tree as it blosssoms with beautiful red flowers at Christmas time which is mid summer in New Zealand.
Fern- you will find these almost anywhere you go in New Zealand bush.
New Zealand map showing the three main islands: the North Island, the South Island and Stewart Island.
Bumble bee: one of the most famous toys made in New Zealand is the 'Buzzy Bee" which is a pull-along toy representing a bee but with rotating wings and wheels.
Pavlova- this one is a little controversial as Australians and New Zealanders lay claim to it but according to Wikipedia the research places the balance in favour of New Zealand!   The pavlova  is named after the Russian ballerina and is believed to have originated during her tour to both countries in the 1920s.
The cow and the sheep need no explanation, sheep outnumber people but that does NOT mean you are likely to encounter any when walking down the streets of our towns and cities!
