About This Item

Thunderbolt : founded on the beach of german island „Rügen“ (Baltic Sea)

" Thunderbolts "

" Thunderbolts " are the fossil shells ( the rostrum , the posterior part of the skeleton ) of belemnites , the primeval octopus. At the end of the Cretaceous died out almost the whole order of belemnites.

After storms , many of these rostra , if they are stored in soft sediments , rinsed free. Superstition had to accept the people, the god of thunder, they hurl to the earth. The Thunderbolt was placed as a protection against lightning under the roofs. Carried with him he should protect man from the lumbago.

The meaning of the name Thunderbolt goes back to the Germanic god Thor. The counterpart to the Norse Thor sent a Weather God regularly lightning down to earth. This met ,the legend, in sand and " petrified " to thunderbolts. Belemnite , as alternative name is the Greek translation for lightning projectile.

Properties

Belemnites are the fossilized " rudder " of cephalopods that lived in the former seas off 358-70 million years ago. Based on fossil full body finds the shape was reconstructed by the so-called cephalopods and the similarity to the now existent squid are found. Like the octopus also passed cephalopods from a protective body - Proostrakum in which there was a kind of swim bladder (called cuttlebone ). At the rear end of the animal , there was a pointed , elongated hardening , which was used for navigation in the water : the rostrum. That rostrum was layered from the mineral aragonite.
