About This Item

The Arkaroo, rainbow serpent of the Flinders Ranges in Aboriginal mythology, is deeply associated with the geology and the interior of the Earth. As he sought out to drink the waters of Lake Frome empty, he retired into the ranges carving the valleys. At rest places, he made water, resulting in springs and water holes. The salty water did not become him and so he is sleeping, emitting rumblings while he turns around. Geologically, these rumblings are seismic waves from relatively small earthquakes.

Second to find this 5/5 earthcache - did it by rock swimming - an absolute きもちいい。Be aware: I am a trained rock-swimmer for life-saving, so only do it when you are absolutely confident! First part was along the hotel site, just off the conference. Standing on the cliffs, I first observed the shore and waves to find a sweet spot to enter and exit. There was a rock where water oscillates up and down, with little lateral movement, juts enough to step onto it. Jumping in is easy - and so beautiful - under water yellow fish, a paradise. The water is warm and scenery - so I had the luck to swim along the shore, from one waypoint to the other. Coming close to the rocks and going up and down is just fantastic... As I said, you know to do it, but it's an absolute kick! Swam back to te sweet spot.... as usual, you have to wait to get the right wave of the right hight. A lifeguar was alerted, so i quit, climbed up the rocks and had a chat - no worries... He was reassured, so I wet for another swim.
    .
Next day same at lava tubes GZ. the swim was fabulous again. but then, the land visit, too - with a bit od rock climbing, you get into the tubes. Had a rest here for a while, to enjoy the nature and study the surface teture of the tubes - different to the top and bottom. Again, be careful - rock climbing s my other extreme sports, if you know me!
    .
Certainly, every day I have had a swim, from now on. Top cache this year on Hawaii! TFTCM!

Hurray, another earthcache - isn't Hawaii full of those? Off to the back sands of Pololu - with this wonderful drive through the lava fields. Could stop here for hours and explore - basically what I do across the island! So much to learn of aa and pahoehoe. Looks the latter was quite liquid at its surface, such that she could flow and smoothen - surface reconstruction via capillary forces, surface tension - while aa looks like a cooler, solidified surface, floating on the lava underneath and pushed in the fields of gravity, breaking but not reconstructing. Interesting how vegetation enters into this, when observing older lava fields. Must have been stunning when it came down! TFTCM!

Hmm, spotted this earthcache spontaneously in the lunch break of the conference. So came barefoot, and ith cozzies for a swim. It was a bit difficult to reach the shore line, as spiky items on the soil. Ready for a swim, I spotted many sear urchins, so I better let her go and come another time, if time and sea allows...

Hurray - another Earthcache! Aloha, I did big mistake: didn't bring my gopro on this trip! Nor did I have goggles, snorkel or fins. Well, decent fins are grown to my legs, as I am a Surf Life Saver. Easy to answer the questions at land, then I swam to sea and found the white sanded area in 7-8m depths. Descended a few times, and found some artificial rocks - I touched them and clearly, it was concrete. Dived a few times in this absolutely wonderful water, and tried to read the text when close to it. Going to depth, I could not stay too long, taking into account the time and effort to swim upwards. Haven't been so deep for a while. 35 Years ago, I did some 10m diving in Koversada, Yugoslavia. Could decipher an A letter. As I run out f breath and surface rests became more and longer, I asked a passing lady whether she can see a text written at the ground. She was so kind to pass me her goggles - and even then, I saw the extension and the state, needed to decipher more.... There it was, Mahalo! The swimming in the water was so great that I have been back tomorrow, diving down again and bringing a hand full of the white sands to the surface. And definitely, will need to come back with my gopro! A favorite, TFTCM!

    Dear Schottishman,

I have visited your earthcache http://coord.info/GC5FDZF

    here the Q&A:

LOGGING TASK: To log this Earthcache, send us a message with the following information:

    Billow

    1. Do you see more billowy or ropy Pahoehoe lava at the "two step" entrance to the Bay?

    Pillow

    2. Why do you think Pahoehoe lava is relatively smooth and flat?

Surface tension high T. lava is hot enough that the suface can flow and recover, in contrast to Aa, where the surface beaks and has no time to render smooth, before it cools and freezes.

    3. What does the lava flow have to do with the creation of the fertile coral reef?

Gentle slope. enough roughness for attachments of the marine life.

    4. What was the word you saw spelled out on the ocean floor?

What an excellent idea to establish this parkNgrab earthcache. I am on the way down to the coast, staying up the hill in an airbnb. The wole lava landscape here is fantastic, a little more overgrown than on the other side of Mauna Loa. These so-called stalactites rendered my wow-effect, and caching later on the island, I recognized more of them. Good thing, TFTCM - und Gruesse nach Deutschland!

    Hallo rheinflut1995,

habe Dein Erarthcache http://coord.info/GC5HAVW gefunden. hier die Antworten:

    Could you find stalacmites?

    No.

Could you see different color zones?

Yes white beige gray. minerals segregated over time.

Do you think, these structures are stalactites?

No. they are droplets from solodifying lava

    What observation guides your decision?

the 'stalactites' show small pores (air bubbles) which are the same kind of pores as in lava. stalactites would not form such pores.

With your answers, what do you think, how these 'cones' were formed?

when the cave (lava tube) emptied, i.e. the melt flowed off the hollow, the wet ceiling formed droplets, like when you sprinkle the showwr room ceiling with your shower. then these droplets solidificated upon cooling.

Finally, how were the caves formed?

it is a kind of system related to lava tubes, where hot melt was included in a solid matrix, then the tube emptied and the hollow was left.

This beach was the goal of the afternoon - I love black beaches, volcanoes, and of course the ocean. Have some black sands from Hawaii back in Australia - not from here, scientifically exported for powder diffraction purpose. Not done yet, otherwise I'd post the diffractogram. Most amazing thing today, is the turtles with whom I swam in the ocean. First I saw one beyond the rocks at GZ, then I went swimming at the sands part, and suddenly one below me. Fantastic, how this sand has formed! TFTCM! Certainly a favorite!

The Earthcache was my reason to stop and a first target of this first afternoon excursion on ハワイ. After seeking the cache near the car park, a little hike to get the blood running, after arriving yesterday from Sydney, without having slept too good in the plane. Finding this pit crater is a wow effect - like so many things on the island. Was still too lazy to make my way down to the ground, although I see other logs that this is possible for a mountaineer and rock climber. A few mozzies. Must come back with friends and family! Thank you for the education, and opening my eyes to this wonderful feature of nature. TFTCM!
Q1. Regarding the description of a pit crater above: Please describe the difference of a pit crater to a caldera in your own words.

- a pit crater forms when an underground cave collapses, such as a lava tube or other hollow. in a caldera, material is expulsed by volcanic eruption.

Q2. Have a look to the rim of the crater. What do you think how old the crater is? (young, middle-age or older

- the rim is steep, at some places overhanging, but not too much - it's a transition between young and middle age.

Q3. Look around the area of the pit crater. What kind of lava do you see? (A'a or pahoehoe)

Ofcourse, as the very last cache of the round trip to Arkaroola, we selected an earthcache in that boring region of Orange hinterland - and we discovered it is not that boring at all! A big WOW! We had all that rock climbing gear in the Blue Desert Drive, however, time is running and we need to hit th beach for a surf life saving patrol, tomorrow. So, we explored the caves and had a little boulder. WE have counted the picknick tables, however, it is a bit over the top to count the signs and toilets, the thing being an erthcache - the cache owner might perform some maintenance on this. So we answered one of the have-been-there questions and skipped the others, answering geological and scientific related questions only. To proof we've been there, we rather upload our pictures - there were plenty of opportunities. I liked the big big cave, leading down to the river. Will be back, for sure, fr rock climbing exercise.
- limestone dissolved in water (light acidity)

12. What are the lumpy things hanging down from the ceiling?

- stalactites

13. How were they formed?

- Ca++ water and CO2 from the air precipitate form calcium carbonate with water, which recipitates there, where the wter remains longest - at the droplet in the tip.
Explore the cave:

14. In some places there are things rising from the ground. What are these called?

- stalacmites.

15. How are these things formed?

- water from the stalactites drops here and the same chemical procsess occurs. since the droplet splash, stalamites ar much larger in diameter than stalactites.

16. When a thing on the ground joins with a thing from the ceiling what is it called?
Back to normal, after having sought my 1001th geocache in 3 states. We spent last night in Queensland and now made our way down to Tibooburra in order to find this fantastic outback earthcache. Certainly, we do enjoy Tibooburra and the rocks - particularly the round granites, further down, between which we have camped years ago. First time here on Sunset Hill! I wonder, how the granite outcrops in this area are correlated to those on Eyre Peninsula...
Heading now to Bourke , via Wanaaring, on dirt roads. TFTCM!
