Die blaue Blume ist ein zentrales Symbol der Romantik. Sie steht für Sehnsucht und Liebe und für das metaphysische Streben nach dem Unendlichen. Die Bedeutung der blauen Blume entwickelte sich später auch zum Zeichen für den Wunsch nach dem fernen Fremden und einem Symbol der Wanderschaft.
Als reale Entsprechungen der blauen Blume werden oft in Mitteleuropa heimische blaublühende Pflanzen angesehen, wie etwa die Kornblume oder die Wegwarte. Novalis spricht allerdings vom blauen Heliotrop.
