Little Fighter
My twin sister and I were born prematurely in December 1977. We were very small and very sick. After being transferred to Colorado General Hospital, it was determined by my doctors that I would need a life-saving heart Surgery in order to survive. My mother, who was very ill as well, was not able to see us for several days after our birth and was not aware that I undergone the heart surgery. When she was wheeled into the NICU to see us for the first time, she noticed a tiny knitted boxing glove hanging above me in the isolette.
My mother asked my father where it was from. The nurse chimed in and said that the boxing glove was placed by a volunteer- over the bassinette of the baby who was the sickest, which at the time was me. She told my parents that a volunteer had made it as a symbol to the babies to ‘fight’ to get better.
It worked for me. The next day, when my mother returned to visit me, the boxing glove had moved on, and I was getting better.
The boxing glove has always been a special symbol to me as a reminder to fight and to be strong.
