About This Item

Bert relaxing on begonias in owner's garden

I am a very cute and photographic little guy so please take my photograph with flowers...wildflowers or those in your garden, so that my owner can follow my travels.

Please take the time to upload any photos or stories of Bert's adventures onto this page either by visiting then editing your log below or by writing then editing a note. This means that anyone can enjoy these at a glance. Many thanks in advance!

Fascinating Facts

Butterflies smell with their feet!

If they taste something sweet their tongues come out!

Their tongue (proboscis) is 3 times the size of their body!

They need the warmth of the sun to heat them up before they can fly. Their wings act as mini solar panels!

Butterflies have no eyelids so they rest rather than sleep!

They are pollinators so are very important for our survival!

Butterflies are fussy eaters! They are fussy about which nectar sources (flowers) they use and where they lay their eggs.

In Britain butterflies and moths (the butterflies of the night) are far less common than they were 50 years ago. Flower meadows filled with butterflies were once commonplace but now they are little more than a memory. 97% of these meadows have been destroyed.

You can help butterflies by planting their favourite flowers in your garden or even in a window box.
