The mission of the original Cricket was to get from New Orleans to Normandy, but like so many paratroopers, he never made his drop zone. With the second Cricket, I took matters into my own hands and delivered it to the intended target. With this third Cricket, I am again taking him across the Atlantic personally and depositing him on French soil. I would like to see Cricket III make it all the way to Berlin before heading home to Washington DC, but we'll just have to see. While I would like to see this TB again someday, I am afraid I am releasing him out into the world, never to return again, like so many of the paratroopers who dropped into Normandy. Bon Chance Cricket III, and God Speed.
The cricket attached to this travel bug is a replica of the crickets US paratroopers carried into Normandy on June 6, 1944. The goal of the cricket was to identify yourself to other American paratroopers without using your voice. One click of the cricket was to be answered by two clicks. For a good demonstration on how crickets were employed, watch "The Longest Day" or "Band of Brothers".
