Oxygen Oxygen, a diatomic molecule that enables life to exist here on planet Earth. In the liquid form, ( @ < – 183oC), it has a pale blue colouring and is attracted to magnetic fields. Oxygen is excreted by plants during photosynthesis whereby carbon dioxide and water are converted into sugars such as glucose. Oxygen is used in the oxidative phosphorylation process within mitochondria in eukaryotic cells producing the all important energy currency ATP (adenosine triphosphate).
Only 21% of our atmosphere here on planet Earth is made up of oxygen!
