"Five yen may not seem like a fortune, but in Japan it is considered a lucky charm. The magic of the five yen coin is based in the Japanese pronunciation which sounds like the expression for good luck. Through a simplistic basis the Japanese five yen coin has become permanently associated with better fortune.
Pronunciations that result in similar sounding words is a basis for some Japanese superstitions. Lucky charms develop in various ways through different cultures. Although the root may be simply a homonym associated with five yen, the superstition can easily become embedded in the culture.
The Japanese pronunciation of five yen, "go en", sounds very similar to the expression for karma or good luck. This similarity in pronunciation was sufficient in the Japanese culture to evolve into a well developed superstition. The five yen coin is believed to bring good fortune to those in possession of it."
