This little pilgrim came from the sanctuary at Chimayo, in New Mexico, a site which is considered very holy. He started his journey being baptised in the dirt of Chimayo, which is said to have healing and blessing power. The world is filled with many sites held holy to various peoples, some where miracles are said to have occurred. The Chimayo Pilgrim would like to wander the earth and see all these holy and sacred places. He's open-minded to see things sacred to all different faiths, as he believes it's all part of the miracle that is our world.
Chimayo, about 40 miles north of Santa Fe, was considered a sacred place by the Tewa, the native people who lived there. The current sanctuary was built around 1816, after the miraculous discovery of a glowing cross buried in the dirt. (Read the full story.) Since then, many people make pilgrimages to this site, especially during Holy Week. The dirt from the site is said to have healing powers. In a room on the side of the sanctuary, you can take some of the dirt. The walls of the antechamber to that room are lined with crutches that people have left behind!
It is my hope that a little bit of holy dirt rubs off to bless every one who meets the Chimayo Pilgrim and helps him along his way. (He's got a bit of the dust on him as I drop him in the first cache, and just as the hole in the floor at the sanctuary miraculously never runs out of dirt, so too will this pilgrim always have a bit more dirt to leave behind blessing all he meets.)
