About This Item

This geocoin was issued by the North American Land Surveyors team in the 2011 David Thompson Columbia Brigade.    Nine 6-man North Canoes will be paddling from Invermere, BC to Astoria, OR to comemorate the route taken by David Thompson in 1811.  This route became the only transcontinental commercial fur trade route for the North West Company and was used for 50 years.  We will be landing at Astoria 200 years to the day that Thompson landed there. The NALS team has two canoes participating in the Brigade, Koo Koo Sint and Paddle Song.  Koo Koo Sint is the nickname the first nations peoples gave Thompson because of his determing his location using a sextant.  Paddle Song is the title of a book about Charlotte Small, Thompson's wife of 57 years who traveled with him on many of ths journies.
