Why Didn't I See That Motorcycle?
The bikes riding pattern is different from yours. Different actions may be needed, you may ignore a piece of road debris as a driver; however, that same piece of road debris may be deadly for a biker.
Traffic, weather, and road conditions require a biker to react differently than a driver.
How Can I Become More Aware of Motorcyclists?
Respect the biker: Remember the bike is a vehicle with all of the privileges of any vehicle on the roadway. Give the biker a full lane of travel.
Look for the biker at intersections, when a biker may be making a left turn, and on the highway, when a biker may be changing lanes. Clearly signal your intentions.
Anticipate a bikers maneuver: Hazards that you do not notice may be deadly for a biker.
Allow plenty of space: Don't follow a bike too closely.
Over two-thirds of car-bike crashes are caused by drivers. The driver either does not see the oncoming biker at all or does not see the motorcyclist in time to avoid a crash.
