In 1975 the colour of police cars in Germany was changed from fir green to green and white. Most cars were white with green doors and green front and back lids. The word "Polizei" was printed in white letters on the green parts. The only exception were Bavarian police cars, which were white with a green stripe on every side.
In 2001 some federal states of Germany strarted to etablish silver cars with a green foil stripe on both sides. Because of the plan to have uniformed police colours in the whole European Union, in 2002 the first police cars in silver and blue were procured by the police in Hamburg. Other federal states followed this example. The complete change from green to blue as the uniform police colour (also for uniforms woren by the officers) is planed to be finished in 2012.
