About This Item

Prime 1

Mid size coin with heft.  1.5 inches 4 mm thick antique silver. Available in other metal colors. 300 coins minted. The coin has lots of nice delicate 3-D work.  The front Show the Royal Observatory in Greenwich.  The medallion has excellent detailed 3-D metal work that extends to the cobble stones and brickwork on the building.  The rim is double ridged and has raised metal script that reads "Royal Observitory Greenwich" and "N51 28.677 W000.00088".  The reverse continues the wonderful 3-D work and shows the marker for the prime meridian.  The raised metal rim script reads "Prime Meridian of the World".  Excellent coin.

Info on the coin:  In January 2003, a young man from Utah registered his account with Geocaching.com under the nickname cqdx. But it wasn't until three years later that he really went looking for caches and quickly realized that the geocoins found in some caches could also be a business idea. In any case, he designed his first geocoin at the beginning of 2006 and announced the "New Prime Meridian 3d Antique Bronze And Silver Coin" for pre-sale on February 9th in the geocaching forum

At that time, at least 1000 coins had to be minted to get your own icon. Two editions were to be released: 700 coins in bronze and 300 coins in antique silver. The icon for the "Prime Meridian Geocoin" was designed by  YemonYime, and cqdx organized the production and sales via his? new online company DX Coins. The pre-sale developed well and so the ordered coins could be sent from March 5, 2006.

The 38 x 4 mm Geocoin shows a finely crafted 3D representation of a part of the Royal Greenwich Observatory in Greenwich, England on the front with the marking embedded in the pavement to illustrate the zero meridian. The background to this is the international agreement reached in 1880 to define the longitude of Greenwich, England, as a prime meridian, from which a comparable measurement of time became possible. The prime meridian is located on the zeroth degree of longitude. The line of the prime meridian runs through the Royal Greenwich Observatory in Greenwich. The Earth's time zones are measured from the prime meridian. The time at 0° is called Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) or Universal Time (UT). In the circumferential ring are the name of the place and its coordinates. On the back, the view from the door of the observatory along the zero meridian to the monument on the site is shown in the same, very realistic 3D representation.

Since cqdx had probably had good experiences selling its first Geocoin, a "Geocaching Squad Geocoin" was also released in March and at the end of April in an edition of 500 pieces the "Equator Geocoin" in Antique Gold, Antique Silver and Shiny Gold. Further geocoin releases followed until 2009.

So many of my trackable have been muggled that I only release new GCs as virtuals. If you do not approve, please leave it in the cache for a cacher who understands. Thanks.  JL

Thanks to the 2023 Christmas Day blizzard my daughter, JMVonFange, was delayed in heading home so we spent the bonus time together comparing our caching statistics including trackables discovered and looking through our geocaching pictures. JM has discovered significantly more trackables that I have mainly because while we were staying home during the pandemic she spent time online and spotted numerous TBs that were being shared virtually on various social media sites like Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, YouTube, etc. Thankfully, she still had a few notes that helped guide my search for the same trackables that she had already discovered. After looking at the TB page for each of the TBs that she had discovered, I found that a large number all belonged to several individuals and sent a message to them individually inquiring about permission to log their trackables. This travel bug was on the list that you shared with me.
