Mision #3 James the Jakalope is off to Washington, D.C.!

Devin, Nyla, and Ivy

March 02, 2015

James the Jakalope wants to see Washington D.C. While he’s there we would like him to see the Lincoln Memorial, the White House, and the National Cathedral.

James will enjoy a visit to The Lincoln Memorial. It has 36 flute Dorian columns, one for each of 36 states. The north and south chambers are inscripted with the Second Inaugural Address and the Gettysburg Address. The statue is 19 feet tall and 175 tons. There was a commission for the monument in 1867, shortly after President Lincoln died.  The memorial was ranked 7th most favorite American architecture.

James will also enjoy the White House. It receives approximately 6,000 visitors a day. In the White House there are 412 doors, 147 windows, 132 rooms, 32 bathrooms, 28 fireplaces, 7 stair cases, 6 levels, and 3 elevators. The White House requires 570 gallons of paint to cover the entire outside of it. With 5 full time chefs, the White House can serve as many as 140 guests and hors d’oeuvres to more than 1,000. For recreation, the White House has a variety of facilities available to its residents including a tennis court, a jogging track, swimming pool, billiard room, movie theater, and bowling alley.

He will also enjoy the National Cathedral. It was finished in 1990, is the combination of a two century- plan. It is the sixth largest cathedral in the world and the second largest cathedral in America. The National Cathedral holds a lot of art, including over 200 stained glass windows. The people were given a charter from congress to establish the cathedral and the site on Mount Saint Albains. Building the cathedral started in 1907 with an address by President Theodore Roosevelt.

Mission #2 James the Jackalop is off to London

By Collin and Andrew

September 3, 2014

We would like James to visit England to see Big Ben and The London Tower Bridge.

Big Ben is the clock tower of the palace of Westminster which is officially named Saint Stephen’s tower.. Big ben actuarially refers to the clock’s tower bell. The clock inside the tower was the worlds largest when it was installed in the middle of the nineteenth century. A first sixteen ton weighted   bell was cast by John Warner and Sons in 1856. The tower was constructed between 1843 and 1858.

The London Tower Bridge was built in June 30, 1894. It is the only bridge that is raised over the River Thames.  It was painted red, white, and blue in 1977. In December 1952 it opened with a number 78 double decker  bus was on it. It takes 61 seconds to raise which happens about 1,000 times a year.

MIssion #1James the Jackalope wanders the streets of London

By Tripp and  Miguel

James is one of several trackables sent on a mission by 2nd and 3rd grade explorers from St. Elmo Center for Gifted Education in Columbus, Georgia. Our goal is to follow James the Jackalope as he travels the world, hopefully headed toward London, England. We will track his progress, research the new places he visits and calculate the mileage he travels. Please take any pictures of our trackable along his journey.

We would like James the Jackalope to visit London, England. During his visit to London, James may want to visit the Tower of London. It was built by William the Conqueror in 1070. The Tower of London is a prison. In the center of the Tower of London is the famous White Tower. Over 900 years, the Tower of London has been standing guard over the capital. Today the Tower of London houses the Crown Jewels and is open to the public as museum.

Our trackable should see Big Ben.  It opened in 1859. Big Ben is the name of the bell at Westminster in London. Big Ben is actually the name of the huge bell. The clock tower was built between 1843 and 1858 and is 316 feet high.  The minute hand on Big Ben weighs about 220 pounds and is just over 12 feet long.
