About This Item

prime_300.jpg

This Prime Meridian Geocoin is being released into the wild, free to travel from cache to cache. It features a depiction of the Prime Meridian at the Royal Greenwich Observatory in Greenwich, England - the location of the International Date Line, at 0 Degrees, that separates the Eastern and Western Hemispheres and marks Greenwich Mean Time. If you ever get a chance to visit this spot, you can stand with one foot in each Hemisphere! ;)

Interestingly, the zero meridian used by your GPSr for the WGS84 datum is about 100 meters to the East of this line. This meridian is not fixed on a point on the ground like the Prime, but uses an average of the various continental drift movements - so the datum stays where it is and the continents slide around underneath it.

I really like the design and deep relief used on this coin, and I'm hoping lots of people will get a chance to see and enjoy it. It's journey starts in Northen Minnesota, and we'll see where the winds take it from there! It's goal is simply to gather many miles, stories, and adventures as it travels - pictures are always welcome, and thanks for keeping it moving!
