Current Goal

The Librarian, being a librarian, is mainly interested in books. He has also been known to enjoy spending time in pubs and ''music with rocks in it.''
So show him your library and have a few drinks while listening to some classic rock and roll. But don't ever call him a monkey!

About This Item

The Librarian of Unseen University

The Librarian of Unseen University is one of the most popular characters in Terry Pratchett's Discworld series of fantasy novels.
The Librarian first appeared in the second novel of the series, "The Light Fantastic," in which he was transformed into an orangutan as a side-effect of a powerful magic spell. Discovering that being an orangutan has certain advantages for a librarian (such as not requiring a ladder to reach those tricky high-up shelves,) he has refused to be transformed back into a human, and has remained an orangutan ever since. The other wizards have gradually become used to the situation, to the extent that "if someone ever reported that there was an orangutan in the Library, the wizards would probably go and ask the Librarian if he'd seen it." (Night Watch.)
The Librarian is known for his violent reaction whenever he hears anyone refer to him as a "monkey."

Free at last! For two dark months I have been trapped by this anthropomorphic psychotic cat. I have been grievously neglected. Occasionally, he would come stare at me and purr "Mmmmm, Monkeeeeeey!" and feed me banans. I have had nothing but bananas for weeks. I hate bananas. Clearly he was trying to fatten me up. I think he intended that I be the main course at some horrific dinner. Yet, through all this, my keen intellect divined that the weather was changing, and with it his attitude. It was obvious to me that his beloved hiking season was beginning again. So I devised a plan to escape. Today I realized he was going out again, so I hopped into his jacket pocket when he wasn't looking, hoping to hitch a ride to... anywhere. Well, I was right. Here I am, stuck in this box in the primitive wood. Still, I'd rather be starved here than fattened for feast there. Hopefully some kind soul can retrieve me, and perhaps bring me to the smell of books and knowledge yet again. It's so cold here, and I have no bananas. Please, someone help me!
