Les Shisas sont les gardiens d'Okinawa. Ils en sont l'icône.
Dérivés des lions gardiens importés de Chine au XIVème siècle, ils prirent à Okinawa une forme ,une signification et une importance uniques en Asie.
On trouve les Shisas toujours en couple, le mâle à droite garde la bouche ouverte afin d'éloigner les mauvais esprits, la femelle quant à elle garde la bouche fermée afin de conserver le bonheur au foyer.
Les habitants d'Okinawa toujours soucieux de se préserver des mauvaises pensées placent les Shisas de part et d'autre de toutes sortes de batiments ou sur le toit des maisons.
Les Shisas d'extérieur ont une forme traditionnelle qui se rapproche de celle d'un animal à mi-chemin entre le chien et le lion.
Depuis peu, certains artistes prennent des libertés avec cette forme traditionnelle et donnent naissance à des Shisas très variés dans leurs formes, leurs couleurs, et leurs expressions. Ils sont destinés aux intérieurs des foyers ou ils apportent joie et bonheur.
Ainsi, tour à tour objets d'Art ou Talismans, les Shisas sont l'essence même de la culture d'Okinawa et contribuent certainement à la célèbre joie de vivre de ses habitants !
The Shisa are the guardians of Okinawa. They are the icon of the Japanese archipelago.
Derived from guardian lions imported from China in the 14th century, they took in Okinawa shape, unique significance and importance in Asia.
Shisa are found always in pairs, the male on the right keeps open mouth to ward off evil spirits, the female in turn keeps the mouth closed to maintain the happiness in the home.
The people of Okinawa, willing to preserve from bad thoughts, place Shisa on both sides of all kind of buildings or on rooftops.
The outdoor Shisa has a traditional shape that is close to that of an animal midway between the dog and the lion.
Recently, some artists modify the traditional form and give rise to a variety of Shisa in their shapes, colors, and their expressions. They are intended for domestic homes where they bring joy and happiness.
Either objects of art or Talismans, the Shisa are the essence of the culture of Okinawa and certainly contribute to the famous joie de vivre of its inhabitants!
