Forget about the aluminum pole, it's all about the Festivus clock.
The History of Festivus (Seinfeld)
~Festivus was featured it in a December 1997 episode named "The Strike".
~The writers for Seinfeld chose December 23rd randomly so that the Frank Costanza line 'to get a leg up on Christmas' made sense.
~The aluminum pole was also written into the script so that the line 'I find tinsel distracting' would explain the pole, along with the non-commercialism resistance.
~Although it is not an official element of the holiday or its celebration, the phenomenon of the Festivus Miracle is mentioned twice in the original episode by Kramer. The term "Festivus Miracle" is now a common phrase in popular culture.
The History of Festivus (The O'Keefe's)
~Daniel Lawrence O'Keefe was an American writer and editor at Reader's Digest for more than 30 years.
~He is known for creating Festivus in 1966 to commemorate his first date with his wife Deborah.
~In real life Festivus was celebrated whenever the hell O'Keefe felt like it, September to May. One year there was none. One year, there were two. Daniel's son Dan said he was about eight when he realized his Dad had made up Festivus.
~The O’Keefe's Festivus included “clock and a bag”, and sometimes a clock “in” a bag. The significance of the bag and the clock was unknown. It was never the same bag, rarely the same clock, but always the same wall. The nailing was most often done in secret, and then revealed proudly to his family. When the O’Keefe siblings would ask about the meaning, Daniel O’Keefe Sr. would simply reply, 'That’s not for you to know!
~There was never a pole, but there were Airings of Grievances into a tape recorder and wrestling (Feats of Strength) matches between Daniel, Dan, and his two brothers, among other rites.
~And "A Festivus for the Rest of Us" was an actual family Festivus motto.
