Current Goal

I would like to visit all 50 states and learn about each cacher's favorite children's book!

About This Item

jungle2

TeacherMatt released me, the Kate Waller Barrett Elementary School mascot, the first year our school opened. I left just before the dedication ceremony on a special mission for my classmates. Since the children at my school love to read, they asked me to visit all 50 states and find out everyone's favorite children's book.

At each stop, I want to tell my classmates about my adventures, and I would love to post pictures from as many stops as possible. The kids would also like to see me pose with each geocacher that helps me on my way.

Please keep me moving from cache to cache so I can visit all 50 states!

So far I have been to AL, AK, AR, AZ, CA, CO, FL, GA, HI, IA, ID, IL, IN, KS, KY, MD, ME, MI, MN, MO, MS, MT, NC, ND, NE, NV, NY, OH, OK, OR, PA, SC, SD, TN, TX, VA, WA, WI, WV, and WY! Keep me moving! (list updated 8-24-09)

Tiger will likely find his way to another nearby geocache... in the meantime, he''s hanging out in Millington with us. One of my favorite children''s books is Steam on the Inside by Marian Dean Larson. I have an autographed copy on my bookcase (it was a gift from my grandparents). Mrs. Larson was a grade school teacher in Flint, MI, and some of her students illustrated the book. I have also enjoyed reading anything by Walter Farley and Marguerite Henry (I''m a horse nut).

Tiger will have lots of things to read before heading on his way (we love to read and have bookcases full of books to keep him from getting bored while he waits). He may even play with Penny and Midnight, our two Rat Terriers who go geocaching with us sometimes.

  • Tiger's reading assignment Tiger with some of my favorite books from my childhood. I have my favorite horse stories in leather bound editions.

What a surprise to open a cache and have a Tiger come pouncing out at you! We quickly snatched him up and contained him before he could get away! He seems quite tame and content now though.

We will have him rolling along in no time.

  • Me & Casey the Wonder Dog I had a great time hanging out with Casey the Wonder Dog. Here we are enjoying the new Harry Potter Book which came out this Summer. Casey is learning to be a "Reading to Rover" Dog and helping kids with reading problems. She is a great listener and most kids just love to read to her! After a few times reading to Casey, kids find that reading is fun and soon, the only problem with reading they have is finding more things to read!
Shortly after this photo was taken I said goodbye to Casey and traveled to Northern Michigan. You'll hear from me again soon! Have a great Summer Vacation!

Well, I managed to get found by someone who is new to Geocaching but not at all new to adventure and best of all he has a great Dog Casey who has become my new best friend!
I am learning about everyone's favorite childrens stories and Casey is learning to be a Reading to Rover Dog. She hopes to help kids learn to read just by listening. She told me last night that she hopes to teach them to give her treats too!!
I'm going to hang out here for a while and then head West. I'll try to get some photo's of my adventure over the next month. The journey will be long but filled with fun! Stand by and expect to hear from me again soon.

Neat, we hesitantly grabbed B.E.S.T Tiger Travel Bug who we now call Betsy. We usually do not like grabbing TBs without knowing missions but fate was in our hands. I knew TeacherMatt was local to the area so I figured it would want to move somewhere. Fate worked out as my wife, Mrs. Last Lap is a former teacher and Childrens Librarian. She will post her picks when we replant Betsy in Maryland. As for Mr. Last Lap's childhood favorites I will list now. I still own copies of both and they still reside on my bookshelf in the living room. They are 5th grade appropriate and still good stories. Both were originally Newberry Award winners.
- From the Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler - E. L. Konigsburg (What child has not daydreamed of a similar event)

  • Dead End School - Robert Coles (The Trials and tribulations of a young kid in the ghetto whose family moves abruptly - humorous and poignan t at a level a fifth grader can understand.)
  • Emma Stars in A Geocaching Demonstration Emma was in a geocaching Demonstration in St. Mary's County at the Animal Relief Funday to raise funds for homeless animals. Emma was temporarily placed in a dummy cache for a skit about geocaching played out by the Last Lap Gang. Emma was the star as she was the bug which was jokingly reffered to as "she's not a bug shee's a tiger" that amused the crowd while teaching repsonsible dog owners the healthy benefits of geocaching with their dogs. Mrs. Last Lap has been to the library to make sure what her Children's Literature picks are so I will be placing Emma (Betsy) for her next move and her Maryland count in state next weekend.
