About This Item

In July of 1993, the owner of a local pet grooming and boarding house found her wandering aimlessly through a local park and took her in. My wife adopted her and along with my kids, named her Dixie. She was a black and white mongrel that the vet called a Beagle mix. When people asked me about her, I told them she was a generic dog and that she was a user-friendly dog. Nature has a way of balancing things and what she lacked in good sense, she was compensated for with good looks and a sweet disposition. In fact, people used to say that she was a sweetheart. She passed on to the great beyond in December of 2001 after having touched our hearts in a profound way that somehow made us better people by having known her.

All we have left is fond memories…and a few of her dog tags, which she proudly wore as if having somehow earned them by some heroic deed. I am sending one of them on a journey, to wander as she did on that warm July afternoon back in 1993. It represents the spirit of companionship. Perhaps I’ll get a glimpse of her spirit as it passes by this way again.

Sorry, I didn't realize this was a members only cache when I placed the bug. If it doesn't get grabbed soon, I'll try to make it back to Spokane to get it.

Nice story. My wife and I are dog lovers and currently have two (you can see a picture of them on our profile page). Jake, the black lab, is currently losing his fight against Cushing's disease. My wife had to return to the car with him today after a short ways into a hike - his body has wasted away so much that he was having a hard time getting over downed trees. It's sad thinking about what we have to do shortly. We'll get the tag moving again shortly.
