To visit each continent of the world: (1) North America ~ Apr 2012, (2) South America ~ Jan 2013, (3) Asia ~ May 2013, (4) Europe ~ Sep 2013, (5) Africa, (6) Antarctica and (7) Australia. Do not hesitate to move this trackable to another cache even if it isn’t closer to a new continent. You never know where the trackable will meet someone preparing to leave on vacation. Likewise, do not hesitate to bring this trackable back the United States where it may find someone heading to a new continent. Upon completion of this mission, this trackable will be available for adoption.
I love finding trackables in caches. So, it has become my habit to launch ten new trackables into the wild each spring. In 2009, I launched ten gold ingots each heading to a different college. In 2010, I launched ten little turtles to visit each county in Oregon. In 2011, I launched ten unicorns each heading to one of the world’s most romantic cities.
In 2012, I am launching ten compass roses to visit each continent of the world. They are each named for a famous explorer: (1) Christopher Columbus, (2) Ferdinand Magellan, (3) Hernan Cortez, (4) Jacques Cousteau, (5) James Cook, (6) Leif Ericson, (7) Marco Polo, (8) Meriwether Lewis, (9) Neil Armstrong and (10) Vasco De Gamma.
Marco Polo was a Venetian merchant traveler whose travels are recorded in a book which did much to introduce Europeans to Central Asia and China. He learned about trading whilst his father and uncle, Niccolò and Maffeo, travelled through Asia and apparently met Kublai Khan. In 1269, they returned to Venice to meet Marco for the first time. The three of them embarked on an epic journey to Asia, returning after 24 years to find Venice at war with Genoa; Marco was imprisoned, and dictated his stories to a cellmate. He was released in 1299, became a wealthy merchant, married and had 3 children. He died in 1324, and was buried in San Lorenzo. Their pioneering journey inspired Christopher Columbus and others.
