To travel as many trails as possible, all over the world.
New Hampshire, USA has 48 mountains over 4,000' (1,200 m) high. Since 1957, the Appalachian Mountain Club has awarded nearly 10,000 hikers admission to the AMC Four Thousand Footer Club for climbing all 48 peaks in a lifetime.
East Osceola (4,156' or 1,267 m) is sought out only by "peak-baggers" since the summit is completely wooded and there is no view. There have been numerous rock slides on the north and east sides, giving it a rugged, wild appearance. An 1860 map of the area shows Mt. Osceola as Mad River Peak. It is believed a local resident, originally from Michigan or Wisconsin, named the mountain for Chief Osceola, who was a Seminole from the Florida Everglades.
The mountain is generally climbed in conjunction with nearby Mt. Osceola. The easier route is to take the Mt. Osceola Trail from Tripoli Road (closed in winter) over Mt. Osceola, through a steep rough col to East Osceola and back. This hike is 8.4 miles with 2,950' of total climb. A difficult, but popular route, is to take the Greeley Pond Trail from the Kangamaugus Highway up a very steep climb to the East Peak, and then take the Osceola Trail to Mt. Osceola and hike down to Tripoli Road. This hike is 9.8 miles with 2,400' of climb. This requires spotting cars, or hiking an additional 2.8 miles back to your car.
