To travel as many trails as possible, all over the world.
New Hampshire, USA has 48 mountains over 4,000' (1,200 m) high. Since 1957, the Appalachian Mountain Club has awarded nearly 10,000 hikers admission to the AMC Four Thousand Footer Club for climbing all 48 peaks in a lifetime. Mt. Passaconaway 4,043' (or 1,232 m) is in the Sandwich Mt. Range. It was named for the great chief of the Penacook tribe who ruled at the time the Pilgrims landed. The summit is largely wooded, but there are viewpoints near the summit. Passaconaway means "Child of the Bear". He maintained peaceful relations with white settlers during his reign. Legend says he was buried in a cave on Mt. Agamenticus in southern Maine, but his spirit was carried to Mt. Washington atop a sled pulled by wolves. There, at the Great Spirit's earthly abode, he burst into flames and was carried to the heavens. Mt. Passaconaway is often climbed from the Dicey's Mill Trail that leaves from Wonalancet. This is a day hike of 9.2 miles roundtrip with 2,950' of climb. Another common route is to use the Oliverian Brook Trail from the Kangamaugus Highway. This hike is 10.2 miles roundtrip with 2,800' of climb. A third common option is to combine Mt. Passaconaway with nearby Mt. Whiteface using the Blueberry Ledge Trail, the Rollins Trail, and the Dicey's Mill Trail. This loop hike is 11.9 miles with a total of 3,800' of elevation gain.
