Current Goal

Penny the Penguin is one of 8 travel bugs set free by Mrs. Lester's Kids, a group of fabulous fifth graders from Columbus, Georgia. Her mission is to visit New Orleans, Louisiana. Our research team plans to follow Penny the penguin, taking notes about where she goes and what she sees along the way.  Please take any pictures and share stories with us as you enjoy time with Penny.

If Penny isn’t sure what New Orleans will be like you could tell her a little bit about New Orleans or Mardi Gras. Louisiana's Mardi Gras is celebrated in New Orleans, but also in many smaller cities and towns around the world. Louisiana is the only state where Mardi Gras is a legal holiday. Similar celebrations are also held in the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro which annually attracts a huge number of tourists from all over the world. People anywhere can celebrate this holiday, but there is a major celebration including masked balls and parades in the city of New Orleans.

A sight that would be interesting for Penny to visit is the French Square. The French square is the main area of New Orleans. It’s where she can find some of the famous musicians of New Orleans that play in the bars.  There is the upper quarter and a lower quarter. The upper quarter is where the tourists hang out and look around to get familiar with the landscape and the cityscape. The lower quarter has most of the shops and restaurants scattered around the area.  Jackson Square is the heart of the French Square and the old town square. There are many museums sprinkled around New Orleans such as, the Musee Conti Wax Museum and the house museum, called Madame John’s legacy

If Penny ever gets hungry she should try a king cake. King cake is delicious European pastry served during Mardi Gras, usually shaped like a doughnut with vanilla icing, and purple, green, and gold sprinkles, but there are many ways to prepare a king cake. King cake is a tradition of New Orleans. Every year they hand out king cakes and in some of them there is a small green, gold, or purple baby said to represent baby Jesus. This pastry was improved by Manuel Randazzo and carried on by his son Mandy Randazzo. A long time ago the man that got the trinket inside the dessert would be crowned “king” and would be treated like royalty for a year and then, to make sure they all had a great harvest, he would be sacrificed. Today, thankfully, if you find the baby you just have to buy the next cake!

If Penny is ever thirsty she should try the hurricane drink. The drink was made by Pat O’Brien. This drink is made by mixing fruit. It’s part of a tradition and it always has a lemon. Pat O’Brien made this cocktail during World War II. This drink is sold in most restaurants

If Penny needs to wind down, she might like to listen to Louis Armstrong.   In the 1900s, the musician of the day was Louis Armstrong, a famous jazz star who grew up in New Orleans.  He lived in a very poor neighborhood, so he had to sing on the street for pennies just to make a little bit of pocket money. By the time he was 18, he played the cornet very well and eventually became part of Kid Ory’s Original Creole Jazz Band, a band famous in New Orleans that used improvising, so every instrument played the same melody, but in different tunes. Eventually, Louis became so popular he moved to Chicago and started a couple of bands of his own called The Hot Five and The Hot Seven. His jazz became legendary.  He was on talk shows, had his own radio station, and on an around-the-world tour sponsored by Goodwill.  People began calling him Ambassador Satch, because his nickname was Satchmo, short for Satchmouth.  He was devoted to his work, and he performed in hundreds of shows a year up until his death in 1971.
Penny should understand some of the history behind New Orleans. Hurricane Katrina was the second strongest hurricane ever in this world.  It started in August 23, 2005, and ended on August 30, 2005.  The storm surge from Katrina was 20 feet high. A total of
1,836 were killed.   Lots of people are still donating money to help those who lost their homes during this catastrophic event.
