Illuminati (lat. valaistuneet) oli Baijerissa 1700-luvun lopulla vaikuttanut mystinen salaseura. Kun salaseurat Baijerissa kiellettiin vuonna 1784, hiipui Illuminatien toiminta. Monien väitteiden mukaan Illuminati olisi olemassa vielä nykyisinkin, mutta siitä ei ole todisteita, ellei tätä kolikkoa lasketa sellaiseksi. Salaseura käytti tunnuksissaan ambigrammeja, jotka ovat samanlaisia riippumatta siitä, kummalta puolelta katsot. Kolikon toisella puolella on ambigrammi Illuminati ja toisella puolella muinaisen fysiikan neljä elementtiä; maa, ilma, tuli ja vesi (earth, air, fire, water), joita myös sanotaan klassisiksi alkuaineiksi.
Tunnetuksi Illuminati on tullut Dan Brownin kirjan Enkelit ja demonit myötä. Kolikon omistaja ei ole salaseuran jäsen.
The Illuminati (latin “enlightened”) was a mystic fraternity in Bavaria in the end of 18’s. All social societies were banned in 1784 and this seemed to be the end of Illuminati. Someone says, that Illuminati still exists, but there is no evidence of that, except this coin. The fraternity used ambigrams as their symbol. They are similar despite the side you watch. There is the ambigram Illuminati in the other side of the coin and four classical elements (earth, air, fire, water) in the other side.
Illuminati became well-known, when the book Angels and Demons (Dan Brown 2000) was published. The owner of the coin is not the member of the fraternity.
