To hike interesting trails all over the world, and maybe climb some mountains.
New Hampshire, USA has 48 mountains over 4,000' (1,200 m) high. Since 1957, the Appalachian Mountain Club has awarded nearly 10,000 hikers admission to the AMC Four Thousand Footer Club for climbing all 48 peaks in a lifetime.
Mt. Osceola (4,340' or 1,323 m) is considered one of the easier 4,000'ers. The large flat rock slab summit has amazing 220 degree views of Mount Washington and up to 40 other peaks over 4,000' in New Hampshire. There used to be a fire lookout tower at the summit, but was removed in the 1970s. An 1860 map of the area shows Mt. Osceola as Mad River Peak. It is believed a local resident, originally from Michigan or Wisconsin, named the mountain for Chief Osceola, who was a Seminole from the Florida Everglades.
The easier route to the summit is to take the Mt. Osceola Trail from Tripoli Road (closed in winter). This hike is only 6.4 miles roundtrip with just 2,060' of total climb. A difficult, but popular route, is to take the Greeley Pond Trail from the Kangamaugus Highway up a very steep climb to the East Peak, and then take the Osceola Trail to Mt. Osceola and hike down to Tripoli Road. This hike is 9.8 miles with 2,400' of climb. This requires spotting cars, or hiking an additional 2.8 miles back to your car.
