To travel as many trails as possible, all over the world.
New Hampshire, USA has 48 mountains over 4,000' (1,200 m) high. Since 1957, the Appalachian Mountain Club has awarded nearly 10,000 hikers admission to the AMC Four Thousand Footer Club for climbing all 48 peaks in a lifetime.
Mt. Willey (4,285' or 1,297 m), along with Mt. Field, forms the western wall of Crawford Notch. It is at the southern end of the Willey Range in the White Mountains. It was named for Samuel Willey, Jr. who was killed with his family in a massive landslide in Crawford Notch in 1826. The landslide was triggered by torrential rains following a very dry summer.
The most common dayhiking routes for Mt. Willey often include Mts. Tom and Field, since they make a convenient loop. Hiking Mt. Willey alone means ascending beginning on the Ethan Pond Trail and connecting to the very steep Willey Range Trail. Willey Range Trail is so steep it requires a long series of ladders. This hike is 5.4 miles with 2,850' of elevation gain. Rather than descending the ladders, many hikers traverse the ridge, hiking over Mt. Field and Mt. Tom. You can bag all three summits in 8.5 miles with 3,550' of elevation gain, but does require spotting a car. Other hiking combinations are possible using the Avalon and A-Z Trails.
