About This Item

Hiking Boot TB

New Hampshire, USA has 48 mountains over 4,000' (1,200 m) high. Since 1957, the Appalachian Mountain Club has awarded nearly 10,000 hikers admission to the AMC Four Thousand Footer Club for climbing all 48 peaks in a lifetime.

Mt. Cabot (4,170' or 1,271 m) is the northern-most 4,000'er in New Hampshire. It was originally named "Mt. Sebastian Cabot" in honor of the seagoing Grand Pilot of Henry VII of England. It's also been known as Grand Pilot, Pilot Dome, and Kilkenny Peak. The upper south face features a distinctive band of talus rock, which can be seen from quite a distance.

The most common current hiking route is from the east, taking the York Pond Trail from the Berlin Fish Hatchery to the Bunnell Notch Trail. After 3 miles, you turn south onto the Kilkenny Ridge Trail, reaching the summit on the Mt. Cabot Trail. Less than half a mile from the summit is the old firewarden's cabin, which is open to the public. This hike is 9.6 miles roundtrip with 2,400' of climb. The shortest hiking route, over the Mt. Cabot Trail, has been closed for a decade due to a dispute with a private landowner who owns the trailhead access.
