Current Goal

New Hampshire, USA has 48 mountains over 4,000' (1,200 m) high. Since 1957, the Appalachian Mountain Club has awarded nearly 10,000 hikers admission to the AMC Four Thousand Footer Club for climbing all 48 peaks in a lifetime.

About This Item

Carter Dome (4,832' or 1,473 m) is the highest peak in the Carter-Moriah Range. It has no view from the summit, which is a long wooded ridge.  It's not clear how it received its name. Legend has it that Carter Dome was named for a local hunter, and the name continued on to South, Middle, and North Carter.

The best footing is found by hiking up the Nineteen Mile Brook Trail to the Carter Dome Trail to the summit and returning the same way.  This hike is 10 miles roundtrip with 3,350' of elevation gain.  Many hikers want to include Mt. Hight on their trip, since it has good views from the summit, but doesn't have enough elevation change to count as a 4,000'er.  Going over that summit means taking the Carter-Moriah Trail from Zeta Pass off Nineteen Mile Brook Trail.  It only adds 0.2 more miles and 150' of elevation gain.  A loop can be made by taking Nineteen Mile Brook Trail to Carter Notch, then taking the Carter-Moriah Trail over Carter Dome and Mt. Height, and descending by Carter Dome Trail back to Nineteen Mile Brook Trail.  The total distance is 10.2 miles with 3,600 feet of climb.
