Initially settled almost entirely by soldiers and convicts, colonial Australia’s extraordinary birth took root and perhaps surprisingly, developed into what is today a proud and unified nation. The transition is a story of struggle and survival in a diverse atmosphere of race, class and culture. Born on hardship, shaped by mateship, the Australian ethos is world renown.
Children of those first settlers thrived in a land of fresh air, hard work and good nutrition. They were easily distinguishable from their UK cousins, being more robust and outgoing. They were known as “currency” lads and lasses to the more fragile and gentile “sterling” immigrants.
Ned Kelly was a currency lad. Born to an Irish convict father, he confronted authority he believed to be corrupt, and became a symbol and champion to some of his downtrodden contemporaries, but simply a murderous outlaw to most.
